Every day of our lives we experience some type of stressful situations. It is a rare individual that can exist in our world without experiencing some degree of anxiety.

Managing stress during pregnancy is really not a lot different than if you were not expecting a child. When you manage stress you are taking care of yourself and you are finding ways to solve the stressors and to redirect the energy into positive rather than negative. Stay rested. You need to find a balance between exercise and rest and make sure that you get plenty of each. You need to find ways to be comfortable while you sleep. Sleep on either side, the left is better. Use some pillows for support. Play soft music or run a fan to block the outside noises. Some people take a hot shower or hot bath before bed to relax. Be sure that if you eat a snack before bedtime that you do so at least an hour before you retire. Continue with regular exercise. Make sure that you are doing low aerobic exercises or walking. If you want to do more moderate exercise you will need to clear that with your health care provider. Consume a healthy diet. Your body needs nutrients to handle stressful situations.

Stress during pregnancy can have some negative effects. When you have high levels of stress and anxiety you can have a low birth weight child or you can deliver your child before full term. Other studies show that high levels of anxiety cause high blood pressure, cause you to be anxious all the time, and can cause your heart rate to beat faster. The stressful circumstances you feel will also affect your child. When you eat what is consumed will cross the placenta and nourish your child. Your emotional and mental well-being will also flow to the baby and affect your baby well-being. Be sure to try to keep a calm and serene demeanor and if you do become anxious, then try to eliminate the stressors as soon as possible.

You can help decrease anxiety by talking to your spouse, your parent, or a close friend. They can help you with the anxiety and point out solutions that may help alleviate the cause of the increased anxiety. If you have a challenging day that you know will increase your anxiety then try to plan for the day so that you can reduce the anxiety. Be sure that you ask for help from your family, your friends, or your coworkers. They may not understand or realize that you need help if you don’t ask. If you have a heavy workload you need to try to lighten the load. If you are in a position to delegate, then do so. If you need to ask your boss to give you light duty, a note from your doctor should ensure that you will not have too much stress during pregnancy.
