An increase in the amount of iron you take during pregnancy is a must-no one has to tell you that. However, you need to be educated on just how much is enough for you and your baby and just how much is too much. Iron is the most important element in the manufacture of hemoglobin for the making of the red blood cells in the blood. Your baby needs as much blood as possible to improve its immune system. Women are likely to suffer anemia when they are pregnant if they do not have enough supply of iron in their bodies, but when they have too much of it (since the primary source of iron is red meat) It may lead to other health complications like hypertension. You will know how much you need by visiting a nutritionist, who will look into your specific iron needs. This will depend on the amount of activity you indulge in, your general health, your age and perhaps your weight. You need iron for the strengthening of your immune system and the average amount of iron you will need should be in the realm of 27mg per day. Increase iron-rich foods in your diet like liver and red meat.

The organ that actually provides the entryway into the womb is the cervix. During pregnancy it will undergo many different changes. It plays a very important role throughout the development of the baby in the womb.

For the duration of the pregnancy, the cervix will remain closed. The mucus plug sits in the hole to make sure that its opening is blocked. This mucus plug also helps to prevent infection entering from outside sources. This opening is particularly small especially for those who have not born children before. The opting is still small if the woman has given birth previously but it is still just a very small slit. The internal portions will stay closed. This will work to counteract the pressure that the fetus will be putting in the area, and the pressure that will come from the uterus as well. This will help to provide some additional protection and support for the fetus.

There are many changes to the cervix during pregnancy. It will open up wider and stretch out. At the end of the third trimester it will begin to “ripen.” This means that this organ will begin to change to a dark blue color and it will become softer than it is under normal circumstances. Although it was closed before it will now begin to open and will open all the way to 10 centimeters so that the head of the baby can come through and pass out through the vagina. In order to be able to dilate completely, it will thin out and soften noticeably. Just before it is time to give birth, the mucus that was plugging it will come out. This is generally a sign that labor is soon to start. As labor begins to progress, the cervix will shift toward the front of the vagina.

There can be various complications that arise surrounding the cervix during pregnancy. This is generally very rare though. Occasionally, the organ has difficulty closing. This can cause adverse situations such as an infection or a miscarriage. In medical terms this is called an incompetent cervix. During pregnancy the organ be have to be sewn closed so that it will function properly. This is a very rare condition and only affects about one percent of women who become pregnant.

Another problem that is rare but possible is with how long the organ is. Normally, the organ is about 3 centimeters in length. When it is less than that it can cause a premature delivery. When the organ is too short it will require that the mother remain under very close watch of the physician.

You should wait for the sperms to meet the egg in the fallopian tube- which takes about three days. Testing for pregnancy is all about getting a true positive or negative, so that you are sure of the next step you are going to take from there on. Do not take a pregnancy test less than a week into having unprotected sexual contact, as this will not give you any result you can rely on. You should also have tried to conceive when you are most fertile- when you are ovulating. Anyhow, it takes another three to four days for the egg to travel back to the uterus and get implanted, which will mean that you will have become pregnant. It is the time when the human chronionic gonadotrophin hormone will be released into your body. This is the hormone that is tested in pregnancy when a gynecologist performs a blood test or when you perform a home pregnancy test using a pregnancy kit bought from a pharmacy. The human chronionic gonadotrophin hormone will be present in the mother’s body fluids when she becomes pregnant and for this to happen, it has to be about a week or so after unprotected sexual contact.

A lot of women report leg pain during pregnancy. Some of the symptoms reported are an uncomfortable creeping crawling sensation and wanting to move the legs to stop the sensations that are so annoying. This usually happens when the woman has lain down to take a nap or has retired for the night. One of the names given to this disorder is restless leg syndrome (RLS) when they are pregnant. No one knows the exact cause. Studies have shown a relationship between a lack of iron or an allergy to specific foods that may be the culprit. Let’s look at information that may help you if you suffer from this ailment.

Leg pain during pregnancy or RLS is a situation where you feel you have no control over the sensations that are being expressed in your feet and legs. You feel like there is an electrical current run amok and that your legs are all misfiring. Although the condition is more noticeable when lying down to rest, it can also occur at any time during the day. One way to seek relief is to stretch you legs and the flex your legs until the sensations abate. If that doesn’t work you may not be very comfortable during your gestational period. The medications that a health care provider would normally prescribe for this condition cannot be taken safely while carrying a baby to term.

Since you will not be able to take medications to treat the leg pain during pregnancy, you will need to try to make some lifestyle changes that may help to alleviate the frequency and the duration of the sensations. Keep a good record of what you eat. When you are experiencing the symptoms of RLS then you can look at your journal to determine if there is a food substance that may be the cause of the disorder. Some studies have shown that consuming carbohydrates later in the day may be a trigger. By journaling you should be able to identify what foods, if any, may trigger the condition. You may want to find out if you are lacking in nutrients such as iron. Your health care provider can run a simple test to determine if supplementing your diet with iron will help eliminate the sensations. There are alternative forms of medicine that other cultures use such as acupuncture that has proven to help some women. Relaxation exercises like yoga may provide relief.

If you are in the last trimester of your pregnancy you may just have to grin and bear it. You will be happy to know that the delivery of your child will probably alleviate all the annoying sensations. If you will help the circulatory system from the time you get pregnant by propping up your feet and legs when you can and by doing some light exercise you may find that you will be able to avoid this disorder. You may experience cramping in your legs because the baby is putting pressure on the nerves that control the area. Two other minerals besides iron may be deficient. If calcium and magnesium do not remain in sufficient supply and in balance the results may be cramping, swelling in the legs and poor circulation of blood. Keep in mind that your body will be supporting more weight and the leg pain during pregnancy may be the result.

This is rather interesting, as this is the time when your body is indicating your level of fertility, after which you are free to have unprotected sex if you are looking to conceive and then test for pregnancy to see if you are pregnant. The number of days after ovulation after which you can have a pregnancy test depends a lot on your menstrual cycle and when between ovulation and your menstrual cycle you have sex. Assuming you are among the majority of women who have a menstrual cycle of 28 days, and you ovulate around the 14th day of your menstrual cycle, you will test for pregnancy a week after you have sex-assuming of course you have sex on the first day of your ovulation. Women will know they are ovulating when they experience PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) which again is not absolute as not so many women will experience it as well. Again with the assumption that you are aware of the time when you ovulate, you will test for pregnancy one week after having sex in the most fertile time of your menstrual cycle-at the time when you are ovulating. You will be sure to test positive when you wait for one to two weeks of ovulation and unprotected sexual contact.

There is not necessarily anything to be too concerned about if you have stomach pain during pregnancy. Many times some mild cramping is simply a reminder for you to take it easy, other times it can be a sign of some sort of digestive problem. Although some level of stomach pain during pregnancy is normal there are some times it can be an emergency situation and you will need to call the doctor.

Sometimes this mild cramping is due to the ligaments around the uterine area. They are being stretched out and pulled on and sometimes this can cause some cramping. It can be sharp, or it might be mild. If you get up too quickly, cough or sneeze it may be more noticeable. Because of extra stress on ligaments and muscles some women may experience cramping when they exercise. If you are exercising and you experience abdominal discomfort, stop and rest for a little while. This is no time to try to tough it out.

Sometimes stomach pain during pregnancy can be due to something you ate. It can be because of poor digestion and poorly digested foods can cause cramping. Overeating or eating the wrong types of food you can feel some discomfort. Constipation can also be a major cause for this type of discomfort.

There are some situations where stomach pain during pregnancy can be dangerous and should not be ignored. There are basically three types of conditions that merit a call to seek medical attention.

•	About 1/5 of all pregnancies will end up with a miscarriage inside of the first three months. Miscarriage means that the baby was delivered before it is able to sustain itself outside of the mother’s womb. A lot of time severe cramping which is accompanied by bleeding most of the time can be a sign that there is trouble. If you have abdominal pains that are constant, whether or not there is bleeding, call your physician immediately.
•	An ectopic pregnancy is when the embryo implants itself outside the uterus the tests will show that you are indeed expecting, but the egg will not be able to grow and this can cause sharp abdominal cramps as well as bleeding.
•	Preterm labor means that the baby is born after the first trimester but still a long time before they are due. Cramping and stomach pain during pregnancy are signs that something is going wrong. Do not hesitate to call your doctor in these cases.

One thing for sure is that you cannot test positive for pregnancy two or three days later – this will be overestimating your body. You can test positive a weak or so later and the longer you wait the less you will need to perform a test for pregnancy. Anyhow, to be absolutely sure and to remove the chances of getting a false positive or negative wait for at least a week after having unprotected sexual contact. For those who are sexually active, you may never know really when you conceive within the period and it is advisable to take the pregnancy test when you feel your body getting all tired and your menses delaying. It normally takes about three days for the egg to be fertilized by a sperm since this is the time the sperms travel from the uterus into the fallopian tube. After that, it takes another four to five days for the fertilized egg to get implanted into the uterus and this is what causes the release of the famous human chronionic gonadotrophin hormone that cause the symptoms of pregnancy-the morning sickness and the breast tenderness. Since this is not absolute and may take longer or shorter in some women, it is advisable to take about a week to take this test.

You may have to deal with round ligament pain during pregnancy in about the second trimester. This may come as a very sharp pain that moves across the hip or abdomen area. It may be on one side or on both sides. Many women say that this pain may extend on into the groin area. It is a normal occurrence while you are pregnant since your body is going through so many changes in a short amount of time.

Most Common Causes

Round ligament pain during pregnancy is caused by the ligaments and muscles surrounding the uterus. The uterus stretches greatly when it is carrying a baby and this can put much pressure and pulling on ligaments and muscles that are surrounding it. This causes them to sort of contract and then relax. If you move too quickly from one position to another it can cause great discomfort. Even coughing or laughing can be painful as it causes more stretching. This type of discomfort, although painful, should only last for a few seconds at a time.

What to do to alleviate the condition

The best way to deal with the round ligament pain during pregnancy is to rest. This gives all the surrounding muscles and ligaments time to relax and can bring much relief. Another thing to do is make sure that all your movements are carried out slowly. Move about gradually to help alleviate the painfulness. When you know that you are about to cough, laugh or sneeze you can prepare by flexing your hips and bending slightly in the middle. If you continue having the pain and it is recurring you will probably want to speak with your physician. Perhaps they can suggest some exercises that can help to alleviate it. Perhaps some mild daily stretches can at least lessen its effects some. The most commonly prescribed exercise is done by getting on your knees and hands on the floor and then slowly lowering your head and keeping your buttocks up in the air. This can bring some relief.

When Should I Call the Doctor?

If you take some time to rest but the painful feelings do not get less or go away at all you should call the doctor. Also call him if you are in severe pain. Usually round ligament pain during pregnancy will only last a few minutes if it continues more than that you should call your physician immediately. If it is accompanied by any of these symptoms you should contact your doctor immediately or go to the ER: chills, nausea, cramping, bleeding or vomiting.

When you have missed your monthly period it is important to take a pregnancy test to confirm that you are pregnant. Then again, there are many reasons you may have missed your monthly period. Women who are sick or are anemic have a chance of missing their monthly period and this does not meant hat they are pregnant. You need to be reasonably suspicions of your pregnancy. A missed period when you haven’t been having sex for the last month will not raise the suspicion of pregnancy. Although this is a routine check, the chances of it being negative are very high. A pregnancy test will be testing for the presence of the human chronionic gonadotrophin, which takes over from the hormones in the body of the woman to take care of the pregnancy. Taking this pregnancy test will aid a lot in determining if you are pregnant or not, since it is conclusive. When the lack of menstrual period is accompanied by general body tiredness, breast tenderness and morning sickness, it will be reasonable to suspect that you are pregnant and it will be advisable to check for pregnancy. You can do it from the comfort of home or check for pregnancy from a doctor’s office.

There can be traces of ketones in urine during pregnancy and you will not be considered at risk for damaging your health of that of your baby. If there is a consistent amount present and it is an on going issue, you will be examined for health issues in yourself and in your developing child. What are ketones? They are found in the body as a result of the breaking down of fat and they are used in the body for energy when the body notes there is an emergency. One such emergency would be starvation or another would be a lack of glucose. When the fat reserve is tapped for energy in the body the result is finding the substance when the woman urinates.

The normal digestive process will make glucose from the foods that we ingest. When a woman becomes pregnant hormones in the placenta will cause the woman’s body to become insulin resistant. This resistance makes it harder for the blood to transfer glucose to the cells that need the substance. Even though the blood has the glucose necessary to supply the cells, it cannot do so because of the resistance. The cells will not get the substance they need to produce the energy that the body requires. The cell will go to the fat storage and get the energy it needs and then ketones are produced as a result.

Finding Ketones in urine during pregnancy can be because of many different reasons. The woman may not be getting the required amount of calories from ingesting foods. She may be skipping meals or waiting too long between meals and snacks. She may be nauseated and vomiting. She may have insulin resistance or gestational diabetes. She may just be dehydrated. At any rate, there should be testing done by the health care provider to determine the root cause of these symptoms and to treat when possible.

Testing for ketones in urine during pregnancy is not like other tests that are designed to determine the amount of sugar in the blood. You can buy testing kits over the counter but for the best results you should go to your physician. As soon as you arise, you should test because when you have not eaten throughout the night your blood sugar levels can drop and the cells look for the fat storage for energy and give off the byproduct.

One way to prevent this disorder is to eat regular well balanced meals. You should eat or have a healthy snack at least every four hours. Eat at bedtime a snack that has protein and starch. Protein will help slow the starch being absorbed and the energy produced will be available to the body for a greater length of time. If you go more than 10 hours between when you go to bed with a snack and when you arise you will find that you will be more prone to the disorder. If you find that you have traces in your system you will probably be okay. This should serve as a warning to you that you may need to pay closer attention to what you eat and when you eat it.

If you or your health care provider continues to find these substances or find them in greater amounts you will probably be considered at risk and need to seek some sort of treatment for the condition. Some studies are linking high levels to lower intelligence and learning disabilities in children. This is a condition that will require frequent monitoring especially if you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. When ketones in urine during pregnancy are found, be sure to seek the advice and follow the advice and treatment your health care provider gives.
